Hull

In the 1950's Hull trawlermen made Hull a wealthy city. In 1961 3.58% of working males were fishermen.

But in the 1970's the industry began to decline (by 2003 only 163 people were employed in the fishing industry) and the City had to find new ways of creating employment.

Going up in Hull:

retail; health & social care; leisure & tourism; public sector

It is anticipated that there will be an increased demand for new construction workers (about 750 - 900 a year) until 2008 whilst redevelopment work is going on in the city.

Construction, engineering & manufacturing are important sectors for the City but they are not anticipated to produce a big increase in the number of jobs available.

Going down:

agriculture & horticulture; manufacturing
