Health & Social Care

Kai Andrew a Student at John Leggott College, Scunthorpe

Job Role: Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) Double Award in Health & Social Care

Kai, aged 19, is just finishing an Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) Double Award in Health & Social Care at John Leggott College and has been offered a conditional place on the Social Work Degree course at Sheffield Hallam University.

How He Got There

Kai joined John Leggott (North Lincolnshire's Beacon Status, open access 6th form college) having taken Maths, English, Dual Science, Art, History, Geography and Art Graphics GCSEs. Initially Kai did not have enough GCSEs to enroll on the AS course, so joined the intermediate course, as a means of accessing advanced level the following year.

At this stage Kai had no intention of following a career in Health & Social Care, but enjoyed the course so much that he decided to progress to the AVCE. During this 2 year course he re-sat his English and Maths GCSEs whilst also studying AS Applied Science and Critical Thinking plus General Studies. This has taken a high level of commitment as Kai, since the age of 14, has been the sole carer of his mother, who suffers with Multiple Sclerosis.

Kai now intends to become a Social Worker when he has completed his course at Sheffield Hallam.
